The Growing Demand for Gluten Free Snacks in Australia

Australian health food store reflecting the growing gluten free market Australia

Remember when the gluten free section of an Australian supermarket was a tiny, forgotten corner at the back of the store? Not anymore. It now has its own section, and shows up across many other categories too. Awareness has never been higher.

But let's be clear from the start: for people with coeliac disease, gluten free food isn't a trend. It's food they need to trust. That gives this category a different foundation.

Why is there demand for gluten free food in Australia?

Demand is supported by an ongoing medical need. Coeliac Australia estimates approximately one in 70 Australians has coeliac disease, with many still undiagnosed. For people diagnosed, a strict gluten free diet is the treatment.

That's a sizable group of shoppers. And the impact reaches well beyond the person diagnosed.

One gluten free customer can influence more than one sale

A person with coeliac disease is often not the only one buying their food. Parents shop for kids. Partners shop for each other. Grandparents keep suitable food on hand for visiting family. Friends pick something everyone can share.

One person's dietary needs shape several other people's buying decisions. For retailers, that broadens the opportunity: you're serving the household, not just the individual diagnosed.

People still want normal snacks

A coeliac diagnosis doesn't stop anyone wanting a biscuit with their cuppa. Customers still need something for the lunchbox, the road trip, or the 3pm slump. Our Complete Guide to Gluten Free Snacks covers more of these everyday moments, from work and travel through to afternoon tea and café stops.

Australia sets a high bar

Here, "gluten free" isn't just nice wording on the front of a packet. Food Standards Australia New Zealand sets specific conditions for the claim: foods must contain no detectable gluten, with further requirements around oats and malted gluten-containing cereals.

That's a solid starting point. But it also means shelf labels, product descriptions and staff conversations need to be accurate. Our Retailer's Guide to Building a Trusted Gluten Free Range covers what that looks like in-store.

Trust makes shopping easier

Standing in an aisle reading six packets to work out which is safe is hard work. Spotting a product you already know is much easier. Familiar products, clear labelling and recognised endorsement programs all lighten that load.

Bouddi Biscuits carry the Coeliac Australia Endorsement logo. We've explained what that means in What Does Coeliac Australia Endorsed Mean?, or you can read about the program directly through Coeliac Australia.

More products isn't always better

Here's where retailers can get caught out. A bigger gluten free section doesn't automatically mean a better one. If half the range barely moves and popular lines are always out of stock, more choice hasn't solved much.

Focus instead on products people come back for, reliable availability, clear labelling, good shelf life and useful formats. A smaller, carefully chosen range beats an enormous wall of products nobody quite understands. If you're reviewing your range, our wholesale team is always happy to talk through what's working for other stockists.

Gluten free can live outside the gluten free aisle

This is one of the fun parts. A gluten free snack belongs in a dedicated dietary section, but that's not its only home. Try it beside the coffee, in lunchbox displays, at the counter, or alongside other biscuits and gifting. Somebody buys it because they need gluten free. Somebody else buys it because it looks delicious. That's exactly what you want.

Australian made matters too

Gluten free and Australian made are separate considerations, but shoppers can care about both. If origin is part of your buying decision, check the actual country of origin statement. The ACCC provides guidance, since terms like "Australian made" have specific meanings.

Where Bouddi fits in

We make Bouddi Biscuits on the NSW Central Coast, baking by hand in small batches, in a dedicated gluten free and nut free facility, and we carry Coeliac Australia endorsement. Read more about how we got started on our story.

But we've always wanted our biscuits to pass another test too: would you still choose this biscuit if you didn't have to eat gluten free? For us, that's the fun bit.

Final thoughts

Australia's gluten free market is ultimately about people wanting the same thing everyone wants: food they enjoy, products they trust, and enough choice that shopping doesn't feel like a compromise. Retailers don't need to chase every new product that appears.

Build a thoughtful range. Keep the favourites stocked. Make products easy to find.

And please, make sure there's something delicious to have with a cup of tea.
